Who are we and what do we do?

Great writing, great reads. Flame Books is an ethical company that publishes original fiction and poetry by excellent new writers, as well as reference and non-fiction titles. Through a balance of literary quality and readability our books support genuine talent, uphold literary variety, and also have wide and consistent reader appeal. Our criteria for the books we choose to publish means that we are able to take risks on unique publications and will not automatically dismiss a good book or a talented author if the work sits within an area which mainstream publishers are unlikely to consider. This doesn’t mean we don’t publish books in popular genres – many of our books are in these categories – however readers may find that our books offer something more rewarding and special. The internet is the basis of our presence and activities. This reduces our administrative costs, so that money will be, as far as possible, channelled into new books and projects, higher royalties for authors, and lower book prices for customers. It also provides a more grassroots alternative to corporate publishing, placing importance on reputation and interaction with all those involved in the writing and reading community. Ethically based We support new writers and offer fair contracts and royalties, with the intention of increasing the level of royalty that we provide as we grow and are able. During our reading periods, it is currently possible for us to accept submissions from any writers (no agent required!). We look to nurture new talent and to grow with our writers, with long-term working relationships in mind. Where possible, we also aim to help sustain various charitable creative projects by donation and other support (see or projects page). Looking to the future We wish to maintain an organisation that is viewed by both authors and readers as a great place for new books. We hope that, by taking an interest in our titles, you can help us in our efforts to develop an equitable avenue for authors to bring their work into the public domain, and to protect the longevity and variety of quality work. All titles published by Flame Books can be purchased directly from our website at a reduced price. International delivery is available on all orders. Our titles can also be bought at selected bookshops (or ordered through bookshops) and via all major online retailers.
